The Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development is borne out of a partnership between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network Association (SDSN); a strategic collaboration on sustainable development as the United Nations enters the first year of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. Built on the Millennium Development Goals set previously by the United Nations, the 17 goals encompass a sweeping agenda to free the human race from poverty, realize human rights and gender equality as well as to heal and secure our world. These goals were introduced at the UN Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015 to stimulate global action over the next 15 years.
The Jeffrey Sachs Center will be hosted in Sunway University Malaysia with the support of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, as a regional center of excellence that advances SDG achievement in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The center will be a hub for research and policy practice, creating world-class programs to train a new generation of students, practitioners and policy leaders and develop linkages with major universities in Malaysia and around the world solving problems related to the SDGs.
Together with SDSN, we will launch a Master’s in Sustainable Development Practice program at Sunway University. The program is designed to be a flagship program for sustainable development studies both in Malaysia and globally.
To better reflect the new challenges and opportunities in this era of sustainable development, we will be supporting a revision of the Global Masters in Development Practice curriculum. Our efforts will be directed at keeping the curriculum current and influencing participating universities both in Sunway and around the world.
We will be supporting the SDSN in their efforts to develop a full Program on Sustainable Development through its flagship online education initiative: SDG Academy. The goal of this partnership is the development of 10 additional Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), to be jointly developed by global leaders on sustainable development. The courses will be made available to the public and universities for integration into their respective sustainable development programs.
We are committed to supporting and strengthening the core sustainable development activities of the SDSN Secretariat. This includes development of new SDSN tools.
Together with SDSN and Sunway University, we will facilitate the development of up to 10 textbooks focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, creating a global repository of academic, reference books and case studies aligned with a comprehensive SDG curriculum.
